Sunday’s lamp plan

Twenty minutes of Sunday attention to the week’s lamps and candles makes every following evening cheaper to start.

Stock and place

Check the candles, trim the wicks, dust the shades, and set the week’s candle supply where the hand will find it at dusk. A candle that must be searched for is a candle not lit.

Reposition one lamp if last week’s reading chair moved. Light plans go stale the way yoga sequences do; a small weekly revision keeps both honest.

Decide the one dim evening

Choose, in advance, which evening this week gets the full candle hour, and let the others be simply lamp-lit. One deep ritual and six quiet defaults is a sustainable ratio, as the whole winter will attest.

Sunday’s twenty minutes are themselves a quiet ritual, which the attentive reader will recognise as this journal’s signature move: maintenance that is also rest.
