Place light where the evening happens
A lamp beside the reading chair, one low on the shelf, and one on the table give the room depth and the eye somewhere soft to land. Choose warm tones and modest wattage; the evening asks for embers.
Dimmers multiply the effect, and a single dimmer on the main lamp is the highest-return electrical work a living room can have.
Retire the big switch
Make overhead light the exception, used for cleaning and searching, and the room will repay the policy with calm. Even visitors notice without knowing why.
The last light of the evening should be the smallest one, and it should go out deliberately. The room’s ending, like the yoga sequence’s, teaches the body the shape of the night.
